Tips on Painting MDF
MDF or medium density fiberboard is made birch and larch trees. The chippings are then steamed until it becomes fine wood fibers. Resins are then used to bind them together, and the material is pressed into boards. These boards are quite easy when it comes to painting them, however, caution needs to be undertaken when doing so. In order to paint MDF properly, you need to first prime it, and at least 2 coats of paint.
Benefits of MDF
MDF is used for numerous interior home furnishings like cabinetry, this is because it is more stable and cheaper. It is dense and flat, and most people say it is quite attractive. It has no surface grain, so it is cut, drilled, machined or filled easily.
Prepping
Should you be planning on cutting your MDF before painting it, then you need to wear a mask, as the dust contains resin and wood particles, which can be hazardous to your health when inhaled. Small holes or gaps need to be filled, and any rough edges need to be sanded before you to paint.
Priming
MDF is often pre-primed, however, when your is not, then you need to prime it first. You can use any kind of primer, like an acrylic primer or emulsion paint. This primer base-coat will help to give the top coat a more true shade and prevents it from getting affected by the color of the board. The primer will combat the MDF’s tendency to blotch due to its porous surface.
Applying the Paint
When you start to paint solid areas, paint brushes and rollers will suffice. However, for the more intricate pieces, it is advisable to use spray paint and not a roller or brush. Spraying the MDF can cover surfaces more evenly, without having an excessive buildup of the paint.
